Boiler Replacement
Modern boilers cost less to run because they use advanced technology and are energy efficient. In a year, you spend about 55% on energy bills, and thus you need to have an efficient boiler to reduce utility bills. A boiler that's well maintained is more efficient although it loses some heat as the hot gases escape up the flue.

However, if you have a condensing boiler, you would end up saving a lot of energy because it has a larger heat exchanger. The heat exchanger recovers more heat and is more efficient because it sends cooler gases up the flue. It is important to understand the type of boiler you have at your home because it can determine how high or low your utility bills will be.
What should I consider when replacing my boiler?
When you plan on replacing your boiler, there are some factors that you need to consider to make the right choice. Therefore, you may gather information online, ask friends or seek help from an expert to make an informed decision. Here are some of the factors you should consider:
Fuel type
The first thing you need to consider is the type of fuel you use in your home because it will directly determine the type of boiler you will install. Gas is the cheapest source of fuel at the moment. Hence, you should consider installing a gas boiler if you already have a mains gas supply. However, if you don't have a gas supply in your home, you can opt to use other forms of low-carbon heating, e.g. biomass or heat pump. The final choice might be to get a gas connection to your home. You will have to contact the company that owns and operates gas in your area to know the process of installation and the cost.
Boiler type
If you have an old boiler that has a separate hot water cylinder to store water, you need to upgrade with a new boiler or a combi boiler that doesn't require a hot water cylinder to store hot water. Normally, a regular boiler is less efficient than a combi boiler, but because it stores hot water in a cylinder, some heat is lost from the cylinder thus becoming less efficient. Therefore, if you want to reduce your utility bills, a combi boiler is a good choice. However, to choose between the two, you need to consider these factors:
Space in your home:
If you have limited space or need to save space, a combi boiler is the best choice because it does not need a hot water cylinder.
Your hot water usage:
Since a combi boiler does not have a hot water cylinder, it is ideal for small families that do not require a lot of hot water. A regular boiler is good for large families because it provides more hot water.
Compatibility with solar water heating: Combi boilers are not compatible with solar water heating. So if you are thinking of installing solar water heating, a regular boiler is the best choice.
Should I replace my boiler?
It is advisable to replace your boiler if it was installed ten years ago. You will not only install a more efficient boiler but also save on repair and maintenance costs that are always associated with old boilers.
